FOREWORD to 1997 year Anthology IX edition
-----
Part Nine of the "Anthology of Compositions for Button Accordion" contains some
pieces of this country's accordion music of the latter half of the seventies, when
many professional composers took an interest in the modern button accordion, thus
admitting the merits of the instrument and its culture; this interest on the part
of those renowned for their achievements in orchestral and chamber music had been
given rise by the generally known proficiency of our distinguished concert accordionists,
who must be given credit for practically assisting the composers in writing for
the instrument. E. g., S. Gubaidulina, one of the most authoritative — universally
acknowledged — composers in these days, had been working on her accordion pieces
in collaboration with F. Lips; G. Banshchikov, one of the leading Petersburg composers,
had started on his cycle of accordion sonatas on O. Sharov's advice; the widely
popular accordion works of A. Kusyakov had been called into being owing to his close
contact with V. Semyonov; the Rhapsodic Sonata had been composed by V. Dovgan specially
for V. Muntyan. As to V. Zubitsky, he is a talented composer and an excellent performer
in one.
A. Kusyakov, V. Dovgan and V. Vlasov have contributed to the cause of reinterpretation
of national folklore: A. Kusyakov was the first to utilize, in an original way,
traditional melodies of the Don Cossacks in accordion music; in V. Dovgan's Rhapsodic
Sonata and V. Vlasov's Paraphrase effective use is made of Guzul instrumental tunes.
V. Zubitsky, in his Partita, goes without quoting folk motifs, though the spirit
of folk music makes itself felt in quasi-improvisatory turns of phrase, in rhythmics,
in many expressive melodies.
The compositions included in the present volume are constantly played in the classroom
and in the concert hall, notably in young performers' competitions. E. g., all participants
in the 1985 "Grand Prix" International Competition in France had to play the First
Sonata by G. Banshchikov; those taking part in the 1979 All-Russian Competition
of Folk Instrumentalists in Leningrad were duty-bound to perform A. Kusyakov's
Fugue and Burlesque.
